CELTA Trainers

We have a very experienced team, including trainers who have tutored on both in-house and NILE Delta courses and who are committed to making the CELTA course an enjoyable start to a career in English Language Teaching. We integrate the use of technology in the classroom and in the training process as a tool to facilitate learning. This helps to prepare our trainees for teaching in the 21st century.

My involvement in education spans many years and my experience is rich and varied. I qualified as a primary school teacher in 1987 and after 15 years was ready for a new challenge and direction. I completed a short, basic TEFL course (2002), then did the CELTA (2005) and finally consolidated my training with the ESOL Delta qualification (2011). I have worked at Good Hope Studies since 2003, teaching all levels and courses and with a particular interest in examination preparation classes. I was one of the driving forces behind getting more technology into our classrooms and into teacher training as a tool for more effective learning to take place and for us to remain relevant in a rapidly changing world. I am currently involved with the ongoing professional development and support of experienced teachers, including tutoring for all 3 Delta Modules, and am responsible for organising and running the CELTA courses.

I graduated with a BA in Languages and Culture from Stellenbosch University before completing the CELTA course at Good Hope Studies, Cape Town (2007). Having worked as a teacher at Good Hope Studies since then, I went on to do a MPhil degree in Second Language Studies (2010). From 2012 to 2014 I worked on a Language and Communications course at the University of Cape Town, tutoring undergraduate learners in academic writing. Subsequently I completed the Cambridge ESOL Delta and since 2016 have been involved in teacher development and training. This includes delivering workshops for teachers engaged in professional development, as well as tutoring and supervising those enrolled on any of the three Delta Modules. As Academic Manager for the Good Hope Studies Newlands campus I am also responsible for overseeing teachers, learners and academic operations.

My involvement with education started as a Tourism Management student facilitating environmental education programmes for primary schools in Port Elizabeth. My first teaching contract took me to Seoul, South Korea, where I taught English to university students and employees of multi-national companies as well as the in-house course and examination for Korean Airlines flight attendants.
Upon my return, I completed the Post-Graduate Certificate in Education (Intermediate and Senior Phases) at UCT in 2004. I soon realised, though, that I preferred TEFL teaching to being a primary school disciplinarian!
With a keen interest in people and their cultures, I found GHS a good match for my personal and professional aspirations and completed the CELTA in 2008 and Delta (specialism in teaching One-to-One) in 2012. In 2017 I accepted a summer contract in Vietnam with Apollo Hai Phong to continue my professional development by focussing on teaching young learners.
Teacher training started in earnest in 2017 when I completed the NILE Online course, From Teacher to Trainer, and after completing the CELTA training programme successfully, I am pleased to be part of the team of qualified trainers at GHS.
